Northern Ireland
In 2014, the registration of motor vehicles registered in Northern Ireland, became the responsibility of the DVLA in Swansea.
Prior to this, there were two entirely separate databases with two entirely separate sets of costs.
It was really a case of being a 'no-brainer' that the two systems should be merged and indeed this had been on the DVLA agenda for over ten years.
The benefit for those motorists with personalised registrations on either the Swansea or Coleraine registers, was that the administrative procedure when switching between GB and NI became significantly simpler and the user cost (the double £80 transfer fee) was abolished and replaced with a single transfer fee of £80.
